mit dem Schwanze/mit dem Schweife, Abt in St.Maurice?

Probably born around 1004, Amedeo (Amadeus) succeeded his father but ruled for only a few short years before his own death around 1052. He wed Adila (or Adelegida), by whom he had issue. A distinguished warrior in the service of the Holy Roman Emperor Henry III, Amedeo is remembered for his nickname, coined shortly after his death.
It results from a diplomatic exploit, of which history has given us slightly differing versions. The Emperor was at Verona, en route to his coronation at Rome, and invited Amedeo to visit him or, according to another version of the story, to accompany him to Rome. It was explained that Amedeo's large entourage, his "tail," could not be accommodated. "I should like to attend," said the Count, "but not without my tail!" Thus he came to be known as Amedeo della Coda, Amadeus of the Tail.
Based on existing records, Amedeo died some time after 18 July 1051, predeceased by his elder son, Umberto. Amedeo's younger son was Aimone, Bishop of Belley.
