  JP., CB. He married Edith Gertrude Godman in June 1890 at London, England. Colonel Robert Stephenson Clarke acquired Borde Hill House in 1893, he was the first owner to plant the gardens and woodlands. Colonel Robert Stephenson Clarke was Gazzetted in 1880, he served with the 3rd Battn. Royal Sussex Regiment in the South African War. He was made a C.B. in 1911 & was High Sheriff of Sussex for 1915. His frst wife died in 1941, he re-married on Apr 16th 1943 to Constance Gwendoline Bellamy (widow née Bourton) at Binstead Church, Rye, Isle of Wight. Colonel Robert Stephenson Clarke died aged 86 on the 3rd Nov. 1948 at Borde Hill House, Cuckfield, Sussex, England.
