Notes |
- Alexander of Nether Wormanbie, who later took the name of David Alexander, on 10th March, 1818, was served heir in the lands of Wormanbie to his father James of Wormanbie who died on 18th July 1815 and was infeft on 6 April following. On 11th December, 1848 he was served as only brother and nearest heir to his sisters Cecily and Caroline Eliza in the lands of Northfield.
David had no male issue but 4 daughters, the youngest of whom, Catherine, married John Salkeld of Holm Hill, Dalston, Cumberland.
To provide for these daughters he sold the estate in 1858 for 38,000 pounds to Edward MacKenzie of Newbie, Auchenskeoch and Wormanbie, who allowed him to remain at Wormanbie as his tenant.
In 1877 MacKenzie entailed the estate on his third son Austin with remainder to his other sons.
Austin sold Wormanbie back to Louis Carruthers Salkeld, son of Catherine and John Salkeld for 17,140 pounds in whose family it remained until 1922 when on the death of Catherine Carruthers (Morton - she married a second time) and resided at Wormanbie, the trustees of Louis Carruthers Salkeld sold the diminished estate to Colonel John James Spencer who had added to it since.
The early titles of the estate however remained in the hands of Carleton Salkeld of Holm Hill, son of Louis.
