• Notes

  1st Bt. held the office of Lord Provost of Edinburgh from 1822 to 1823. He was created 1st Baronet Arbuthnot, of Edinburgh [U.K.] on 3 April 1823, He had held a banquet for the King, who supposedly enjoyed it so much that he awarded William a baronetcy rather than the traditional knighthood for the Lord Provost. He held the office of Secretary to the Board of Trustees for Manufactures.
