      Queen of Scotland, reigned 1542-67,
      Keerde na de dood van Frans II naar Schotland terug. Voor de Engelse katholieken was zij de rechtsgeldige erfgename van de Engelse troon waardoor zij in conflict kwam met Elisabeth I (dochter van Henry VIII). Nadat haar man, Henry Stuart Darnley, haar raadgever Riccio liet vermoorden werd deze door James Hepburn Bothwell omgebracht welke zij daarna huwde. Dit huwlijk was voor de kalvinistische adel aanleiding in opstand te komen. Maria werd afgezet, en vluchtte 1568 naar Engeland. Hier werd zij 19 jaar gevangen gehouden en nadat zij verdacht werd van een samenzwering tegen Elisabeth I onthoofd.
