      Noted soldier & friend of King Edward III.
      1st Earl of Stafford. 2nd Baron.
      His wife Margaret's de Clare inheritance provided chief element of his endowment
      6 Jul 1336 Commission appt to investigate Hugh de Audley's complaint vs. Ralph de Stafford.
      Supposedly Ralph & his kin had abducted Hugh's daughter & burglarized his home.
      Audley also charged that Stafford had married Margaret against her will.
      Edward III intervened & protected Stafford.
      In the end, he & wife were given reversion of much of the Gloucester inheritance
      Summoned to Parliament from 29 Nov 1336 as Baron Stafford.
      23 Apr 1349 A Founder Knight of the Order of the Garter.
