was arrested for kidnapping an 8-year-old girl on her way to school last Friday. The count had selected a house that
looked as if the people living there had money and had observed the daughter three days long. Last Friday he dragged the girl into his car. Her elder brother found her bicycle about one hour later with a letter of the kidnapper attached to it. In a telephone call soon afterwards the count asked for 1,2 million euros ransom. A woman reported the police about the car she had seen on the way to school several times over the past days and had noted the numbers on the plates, one for Oldenburg at the front, one for Leer at the back. It turned out the car had been stolen in 2002. The trace first led to a call-box, then to a vacation house. When the count left the vacation house at the end of the afternoon to make another telephone call special forces rescued the girl from a toilet without windows. The count was arrested at the call-box. He had high debts, one million euros. The count's one-man company was about bankrupt. He had been arrested for tax-dodging at the end of 2002 and was on remand until January, although he had to report himself at the police twice a week. It seems he tried to get money to pay his debts by blackmailing people after kidnapping their daughter.
