Notes |
- Leading Lady: City Lights 1931
Virginia Cherrill first met Chaplin at a boxing match when she noticed him staring intently at her - he later said he thought she resembled Edna Purviance. Having had no previous acting experience, Charlie at first found her perfect material to direct, but relations between them became strained. She got on the wrong side of the great director after lateness on the set caused by partying (she had always been something of a socialite), and was eventually sacked, replaced temporarily by Georgia Hale. But Chaplin needed Virginia, and she completed the film, turning in a nice performance - not surprisingly, her only one for him. Although admitting to being no great actress, she played in a few more films (including Girls Demand Excitement with John Wayne (1931) and Late Extra with James Mason (1935)) and had almost as many husbands to her credit (including Cary Grant and the 9th Earl of Jersey). Later in life she was known and admired for her devoted charity work.
