  • Notes
    • She was born as the slave of John Wayles, but apparently was given as dowery to Thomas Jefferson when Thomas Jefferson married Martha Wayles in 1772. She later became reunited with her brothers and sisters when John Wayles died and Thomas Jefferson inherited most of the rest of his slaves. Some believe that Betty Brown was the original slave mistress of Thomas Jefferson before Sally came along, since the children of Betty Brown were always given special treatment.
