  • Notes
    • - Farmer, school teacher

      1. John was Scotch ancestry, the family having come to northern Ireland to escape religious persecution.

Although one source records John came to America in 1792, we believe he came to America December 13, 1773 with his father, 3 brothers and sister, landing in New Castle, Delaware, settling in Greencastle, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. We believe this as his father would have brought his family with him.

Therefore we believe, in 1792 he probably removed to near Salem Township, New Alexandria, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania where he married Catherine. It is possible John was previously married considering he was about 20 years older than Catherine and the 1800 Census for Salem Township records another male, age 16 - 25 living with John and Catherine. This could have been a son from a previous marriage.

John traveled with a group of other men to Sugar Creek Township and on February 7, 1804 purchased, for 19 shillings an acre, 250 acres of land that a patent had been previously granted to Charles Campbell and Elisha Wick. John begin construction of a cabin but returned to Westmoreland County for the winter.

John, his wife pregnant with James and their three small girls, Jane, Susan and Mary, returned to near the new cabin in March of 1805, stopping at a little school house where James, the oldest son was born. The farm, located on the Kittanning and East Brady road near the Midway Presbyterian Church, through the years was known as the "Brown family" farm. The farm was sold in 1988 by the remaining Brown heirs - Brown, Chesebro' and Harrold families.

      2. John was a Presbyterian Church elder and Justice of the Peace commissioned by Governor McKean "for district No. 2, called Buffalo district" January 1, 1807, taking his oath of office February 9. With the power to arrest, John enforced the Blue Laws to the letter. Any one passing his house on secular business on Sabbath was arrested and kept there until Monday morning when they were released and warned not to offend again.

      3. September 7, 1826 resurvey of land boundary between "John Brown, Esq and Elisha and Jeremiah Weeks" is the first document we have of the "Brown Homestead". Other adjacent land owners were Reuben Burket (sp?) and Alexander Forster (sic Foster).

      4. Documented agreement between John Brown and John Crawford dated April 16, 1831 details how the two "set hands" in agreement for John to purchase 40 acres of land in Sugar Creek Township, Armstrong Co, PA adjoining the John Brown and Mary Fulton lands by paying $40 after survey and $20 seven months later to John Crawford.
      5. John's will dated September 22, 1835 and as recorded in the Kittanning Court House:

"In the name of God, Amen.

I, John Brown of Sugar Creek Township, knowing that it is appointed unto
all men once to die, and being sick and low in body, but sound in mind and
memory, for which I desire to bless God, an my body to the earth whenever
it shall please God to separate my soul and body, and my body to have a
decent and Christian burial, in hope of a joyful resurrection.

arising from the profits of my estate, the increase of the cattle to be for the
