  • Notes
    • HIS LIFE: Robert Browning was a renowned poet of the Victorian era. Born in 1812, he lived the first part of his life in Camberwell, a rural suburb near London (Ward, 14). He grew up with his sister Sarianna Browning, his mother Sarah Anna Browning and his father Robert Browning Sr. (Robert Browning, his father, and his grandfather all had the same name). Both Robert Brownings, father and grandfather, were successful bankers who led successful lives, yet for many years they didn't get along well (Ward, 11-13). His grandfather actually made his father pay for the entire cost of raising him (Maynard, 24). There were clearly some tensions within the members of this family. When Robert Browning (the writer) read some of Elizabeth Barrets poems, he was very impressed and began to write her through letters. Elizabeth was another famous poet of this era These letters turned into love letters, and in 1846, at the age of 34, Robert Browning married Elizabeth Barrett. Their marriage was a very famous and well known one. After this they moved to Italy where they lived happily until the death of Elizabeth in 1861(Markus, 331-334) .

HIS WORK: Robert Browning's first poem, which he wrote at age 20, was entitled "Pauline." He wasn't eager to share his work with the world and made every effort to hide his poems from the public. As a result of this many of his poems are still unaccounted for (Ward, 22). Browning was extremely observant of the world around him. His poems show "his robust optimism and faith in the value of human life"(The World Book Encyclopedia ,537). He was a big believer in taking action, and many of his poems support this value. Over the years he eventually developed a style of poetry known as the dramatic monologue. A dramatic monologue is a poem which is spoken through one of the characters. This style is used to show the qualities and the personality of the character (The World Book Encyclopedia, 537). Some examples of Brownings poetry where this style is used include such poems as "My Last Duchess," "Porphyria's Lover," and "In a Gondola" (Winwar, 98). This style was very influential for the modern world and was probably the biggest contribution to poetry Robert Browning gave to the world. Some other works Robert is famous for are two collections entitled the "Ring and the Book" and "Men and Women" (Ward 15, 248). His wife Elizabeth also is famous for her writings. The most notable work of hers is called "Sonnets form the Portuguese" and shows her growing love for Browning (The World Book Encyclopedia, 537)
