  • Notes
    • left England for New England about 1634.
Went first to Barnstable, then settled in Marshfield,Mass.; of age to bear arms in 1643.

As written to Clarence Crooker by
      Beatrice Neal (a Crooker desc.)
45 Jefferson St., Auburn, Maine (now deceased.)

Francis Crooker,of Marshfield, came to this country in 1635, locating in Barnstable, Scituate, and in 1648 in Marshfield. He was one of the soldiers in the expedition against the Narraganset Indians in 1645. East Marshfield, as Marcia Thomas describes it, is a narrow strip of land 2 miles wide near the Grun River. Here dwelt Francis Crooker and Richard Childs. Francis was for a time inspector of highways & constable in Marshfield & served on the Grand Jury at Plymouth, in 1661,1671 & 1678.
The records of the Court in Scituate, Mass. in 1646, give the following:
---"The Court, having heard both parties and carefully weighed the evidence, doth order that if the said Crooker doth hand in to the governor,a certificate at the hands of Mr.Chauncey, and any other approved physician, that the disease from which he suffers be not the falling sickness, than the said Crooker may, in convenient time, have in marriage, the said Mary Gaunt".
In 1647 the intentions of marriage were published in Scituate, of Francis Crooker & Mary Gaunt.
Jacob Crooker, son of Isaiah 2nd., Bath, Me., b.1809, possessed valuable tracings of the Crookers and their earlier history in England, which might be of vast assistance in following the family history. Jacob died in Waterville, Me. in the early 1880's and left all of his very large property to his adopted daughter, Charlotte.
