  • Notes
    • Heiress of the Sutherland estates and Dunrobin Castle
      Countess of Sutherland
she was the only child of Lord Alastair St.Clair Leveson-Gower. Her father, who died in 1921, was the younger brother of the 5th Duke of Sutherland and, when her uncle died in 1963, the title of Duke of Sutherland went to a cousin, Elizabeth becoming Countess of Sutherland and Clan Chief of the Sutherlands as well. In 1963 she also changed the family name to Sutherland. Her uncle had spent prodigiously and the Countess ever since has been carefully trying to restore the estates which contain extensive forestry, fishing and grouse moors. In 1981 she sold a 1,000-acre estate in Stoke on Trent for £4 million.
