| |
BLG1952 reports that William was "ancestor of William Hallett, of Canons, Edgware, Middlesex, the noted cabinet maker", father of the William who was the subject of one of Gainsborough's famous paintings in 1786 (sb 1785). The following combines what is given by BLG1952 with the information found in the The National Portrait Gallery's site (here) though the latter identifies the William of the painting as grandson rather than son of the cabinet maker, having started with a William Hallett of Crewkerne whom we presume was this William (though he may have been son of this William). BLG1952 could have identified the cabiner maker as this William's son (or grandson) but we suspect that BLG1952 was (also) confused on the number of generations of Williams. |

The National Gallery's site reports (here) that "The Morning Walk" was painted in 1785 for William's forthcoming marriage to Elizabeth Stephens. A site which mentions the history of Canons (here) reports that William the cabinet maker was succeeded by his grandson but that the grandson died in 1785 (presumably immediately after his wedding). However, a page on "The Morning Walk" in the National Trust's site (here) suggests that William died in 1842. |
