'Champernowne1'Index / Letter
Families covered: Champernowne of Bere Ferers, Champernowne of Clist, Champernowne of Insworth, Champernowne of Modbury

(1) Commoners reports that "The family of Campernowne, which in splendour of descent yields to few in the west of England, was originally called Campo Arnulphi".
(2) When we first did this page we did not have access to Vivian's work and investigated what is shown in various web sites. That investigation uncovered much uncertainty & contradiction. Having obtained access to Vivian's work, we have simplified our report but think it worthwhile reporting some of the issues we found. We suggest that much of this top section should be viewed with some caution. Vivian starts with ...
Jordan de Champernowne 'de Campo Arnulfi'
Various web sites name him Jordan de Campo Arnulfi or Ernulfi, with at least one identifying him as Sn de Maisoncelles. Some web sites show him as married to Mabel (dau of Robert de Caen, Earl of Gloucester, widow of Aubrey de Vere) with his son Jordan being the husband of Mabel, dau of Philip de Suligny (possibly by Hawise de Redvers). Provisionally, we follow Vivian in showing that it was this Jordan who married ...
m. Mabel de Soligny (dau of Philip de Soligny)
1. Richard de Champernowne
Various web sites omit this generation, showing Jordan as father rather than grandfather of Henry, some showing Richard as Henry's elder brother. Vivian shows a clear connection from Jordan to Richard but the connection from Richard to the following Henry is with a dotted line, indicating some uncertainty on the connection.
  A. Henry de Champernowne of Clist & Ilfarcombe, Devon (a 1154, d c1210) the first mentioned by Commoners

(1) Sir William Champernowne 'of Clist Champernowne' (d 1304)
Vivian identifies William's wife as Johane. 'TUDOR', one of the sites we referred to when we first worked on this page, suggests that Sir Henry married twice, the first wife being a Joan Arundel, who was mother of his son, and the second being Joan Ferrers, mother of his daughters. Other web sites just show the marriage to Joan Ferrers, identifying her as follows (with some identifying her Sir William's cousin because they show her mother as Matilda, another daughter of Sir Henry Champernowne & Dionisia English).
