  • Notes
    • Born less than a lifetime after the day in 1652 when her great-grandmother Margaret Lancaster belaboured George Fox because she thought him an emissary of the Devil.
Joseph John Fox, her grandson, often went to see his grandmother Mrs Richard Fox.
She was an oldish woman, with " a kind of ivory-white complexion and silvery hair," she was almost confined to her stately armchair; for long ago she had broken her leg in a fall from her horse, and the surgeon had removed it rather unsuccessfully. Now, too, her hands were distorted by arthritis. Yet she was not idle. "always did she sit at her knitting, upright in her armchair by the fireside."
A minister in the Society, she was, even in those days, regarded as one of the older school of Friends. And on both her father's and her mother's side she came of Puritan stock.
