Notes |
- Rita lists Citizen Kane (1941), as her all time favourite Film
Rita is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the first performer to win an Oscar, a Tony, an Emmy and a Grammy.
Rita Moreno made a guest appearance on "Father Knows Best" as an exchange student from India who attends school with Betty. Bud teaches her how to play football.
Appeared in the pilot for the TV series "Empty Nest", which was an episode of "The Golden Girls". The premise was changed in the final version of "Empty Nest", in which she did not appear.
Rita Moreno was not the first person to win a Grammy, an Oscar, a Tony, and an Emmy, despite what the Guinness Book may say. Barbra Streisand won all 4 by 1970 (though the Tony was a non-competitive award for Star of the Decade), and Helen Hayes won all 4 by 1976 (the last being a Grammy for her recording of the Bill of Rights). Rita did not win her Emmy until 1977.
When her star was unveiled on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she fell on top of it, openly and uncontrollably weeping. She later commented, "I had been dreaming of this day since I was six!"
Is a key spokesperson in raising the awareness of osteoporosis and in 2000, was presented with an award from the National Osteoporosis Foundation for her work.
Won a Tony in 1975 for Supporting or Featured Actress in a Drama for "The Ritz.
Measurements: 34-22-34 1/2 (September 1956), 34-23-35 (filming "The Four Seasons"-1981), (Source: Celebrity Sleuth magazine)
Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush [June 2004].
Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004.
In the first season of The Electric Company, she was in a sketch where she would repeatedly yell "Hey You Guys!" It became so popular with the producers, that they decided to use it as the catchphrase in their opening, starting in season two
Personal quotes
"Bigger than life is not difficult for me. I am bigger than life."
"It is very important that women of this country be made aware of the dangers of osteoporosis in the sense that it is a silent and invisible disease with no symptoms whatsoever."
(April 2002) Lives in Berkeley, California.
Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
This charismatic little firecracker exploded onto movie screens as the tempestuous Anita in West Side Story (1961), delivering a dynamic performance for which she won a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award. It was the shining moment in an extensive screen career: Moreno played supporting roles (usually fiery Latins) in nearly two dozen movies during the 1950s. Among the best: a small but noticeable role as starlet Zelda Zanders in Singin' in the Rain (1952) and a plummier part as Tuptim in The King and I (1956).
Since West Side Story her film output has been sporadic, but she's had memorable supporting roles in Marlowe (1969, as a stripper), Carnal Knowledge (1971, as a worldly hooker who services Jack Nicholson), and The Ritz (1976, in which she recreated her hilarious Broadway performance as the spectacularly untalented bathhouse entertainer Googie Gomez). The versatile Moreno was also a charter cast member of the 1970s landmark children's TV show "The Electric Company." (In fact, a spinoff recording earned her a Grammy Award to go along with her Oscar, her Tony for "The Ritz," and two Emmys, for guest shots on "The Rockford Files" and "The Muppet Show.") In 1990 the ever-energetic performer released a very successful exercise video. Still active on television, Moreno's prodigious talent has only barely been tapped; it seems there's nothing she can't do, and do well.
