  controlling shareholder of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. former pilot and airline financier purchased a controlling interest in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and rose to CEO in 1974. At that time, Kerkorian merged the studio with distributor United Artists (which he acquired from the Transamerica Corp.) in 1981, forming MGM/UA. When the Turner Broadcasting System purchased MGM/UA in 1986 it retained only the MGM film library, selling the UA portion of the company, along with the MGM motion picture and TV production and distribution divisions, back to Kerkorian's Tracinda Corporation, and spinning off the MGM Culver City lot and laboratory to Lorimar-Telepictures. Kerkorian sold the studio in 1990 to Pathe Communications who defaulted two years later. In 1994, Credit Lyonaise, a French bank, owned and operated the studio. After several years of trying to find a buyer, the bank sold MGM back to Kerkorian in 1996 for $1.3 billion.
