did not engage in any of his father's business ventures. Instead, David Stuart Dodge, named after his father's elder brother, became a clergyman, graduating from Yale in 1857 and from Union Theological Seminary in 1860. He married Ellen Ada Phelps and they left for the Near East, where they met the Daniel Blisses. From this acquaintance grew the Syrian Protestant College (later the American University) of Beirut, which Bliss directed for 36 years and for which Stuart Dodge acted both during nine years in Beirut and many more in New York. Their daughter Ellen eloped with her cousin Anson Dodge jr, but she died on their honeymoon in India. The Stuart Dodges also had five sons, of whom one suffered of multiple sclerosis. Tragedy did not spare the rich and pious.
