    • A Colonial merchant in New Amsterdam who acquired large land tracts (90'000 acres) in Yonkers, the Bronx and along the Hudson river. Philipse was made Manor Lord of Philipsborough by Royal Charter in 1693. He had a manor house at Yonkers which later became the City Hall and another one at his Upper Mills, in North Tarrytown, New York. He married two widows
      Both marriages brought additional wealth to the Philipse fortune.
      Among other lucrative activities, Frederick Philipse was associated with Captain Samuel Burgess in the slave trade, privateering and outright piracy. In these ventures, a single voyage could yield 5'000 £. When he died, Frederick Philipse was one of the richest men in New York.
      His adopted daughter Eve De Vries Philpse married the younger son of Ollof Van Cortlandt, whose daughter was also Philipse’s second wife.

      His eldest son predeceased him, leaving him a grandson Frederick Philipse II. He was also survived by his second son Adolphus Philipse. His estate was split between these two descendents.
