  - Served in Company D, 9th Regiment Rhode Island Volunteers during Civil War. Obituary (newspaper and date unknown): Richard J. Whittle, who until his death Friday morning in Worcester, Mass. was one of the four surviving members of the now defunct Tower Post, G.A.R., of Pawtucket, was buried yesterday afternoon in Moshassuck Cemetery, Central Falls, without military ceremony. Attending the funeral, which took place from the mortuary of D.W. Bellows and Son at 85 Park Place, Pawtucket, was representative Robert M. Pollard of Pawtucket, another of the quartet. Charles Love of South Attleboro and Charles H. Lewis of Pawtucket were unable to be present. Members of Tower Relief Corps were among the relatives and friends at the service. Mr. Whittle, who formerly lived in Saylesville, died at the home of his son, George H. Whittle. He was 88. Rev. Irving A. Evans, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, Lonsdale, conducted the service, with the assistance of Rev. William E. Dowty, rector of St. George's Episcopal Church, Central Falls. The bearers were Mr. Whittle's sons, George and Frank W., and four grandsons, Clarence W., Howard R., Chester L., and Walter W. Whittle.
