  • Notes
    • From "The Guilford Genealogist" vol 15, #1
The pioneer Dennys to the Guilford County area were the brothers James, William and their sister,
Elizabeth. All three were born in Ireland and came to the Guilford County section of then Rowan County
      from Lancaster County, PA.
It is not known if these Dennys were a part of the Nottingham Company of Presbyterian Colonists for
whom an area of land had been prearranged, although they came from the same area of PA, apparently
knew the colonists and obtained lands to homestead at the same time as the known colonists. Further
they became a part of the Buffalo Presbyterian Church community.
In 1762, James obtained a 650 acre tract from John Nicks, which Nicks, also a colonist of the Nottingham group, had obtained from the Earl of Granville, Dec. 4, 1753. The tract was located east of the site of Buffalo Presbyterian Church, and the north side of Buffalo Creek, in Rowan County.
On Oct. 2, 1761, James signed for a grant of 375 acres from the Earl, lying on Pea Creek, on the waters of the Eno River, in Orange County. This action is recorded as Grant number 35 (for that year in Orange County).
James' will, dated Dec 10, 1790, was probate Feb. 1795, and is recorded in Guilford County Will book
A, page 94, Courthouse Greensboro, NC. The will is silent concerning any division of lands, so it is assumed that land had already been given his sons.
