Notes |
- - First postmaster in what is now state of Arkansas.
- 1817 - Postmaster at Davidsonville, Lawrence Co, AR.
- 1823 - Murdered by a man named Tattman on trip from Walnut (later Vicksburg), MS.
REF: Ralph Dean: Said to be first postmaster in Arkansas, Davidsonville in Lawrence County--according to a letter from Ruth Garner Huddleston, Conway, AR, to Mrs. Stephens, dated Jan. 18, 1938. There is today an "Old Davidsonville State Park" on the boundary between Lawrence and Randolph Counties. This is corroborated in "History of Randolph Co., AR", Lawrence. He says that Adam Ritchie was the first Postmaster, the the PO opened 6/28/1817. He further reports that one L. Ritchie was magistrate ca. 1819-20. It seems that the boundaries of Lawrence and Randolph Cos. may have shifted after Arkansas joined the union.
