  • Notes
    • Duc de Bourgogne 1015
      King of France (1031-1060).
Henri, the second son of Robert II the Pious and Constance of Aries, was involved in affairs of State by his father in 1027 and succeeded him in 1031. He was faced with hostility on the part of his brother, Robert, who also laid claim to the Crown with the support of his mother and leading noblemen. Henri I won the struggle but was forced to give Robert the Duchy of Burgundy. He spent his reign warring against the feudal lords. Having initially supported the Duke of Normandy, William the Bastard, he waged war on him and suffered two defeats, in Mortemer (1054) and Varaville (1058). It was during Henri I's reign that the Truce of Clod was introduced, at the Council of Provence in 1041. The intention of the Roman Catholic Church was to limit feudal wars, while at the same time instigating the Peace of God. In 1051, Henri I took Anne of Kiev as his second wife, thereby developing relations with Russia. In 1059, he involved his elder son, Philip, in affairs of State. Henri died in the following year.
