  • Notes
    • Willem Wardenaar was head of the Dutch trading post on Deshima Island in 1800-1803.
He was succeeded by Hendrik Doeff Junior, who had been Deshima's "First Clerk" since 1799.
Doeff was in charge on Deshima until 1817, meaning he spent a total of 18 years on the tiny island - an incredibly long time considering the tedious existence on an island the size of the Dam Square in Amsterdam, hemmed in by all sorts of restrictions imposed by the Japanese shogun.
After Thomas Stamford Raffles took control as Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies in 1811, Willem Wardenaar played a curious role in an attempt by the British to take over Deshima as well. Accompanied by a number of English officials, Wardenaar tried to convince Doeff to hand over the island to the English, but Doeff was a very determined man who had managed to keep the British at bay before (in 1808) and Deshima remained in Dutch hands, partially, too, because the Japanese shogun didn't trust the Btitish either.

Wardenaar's role in the affair is unclear, except that he was a pure bureaucrat who accepted the transition to British rule in the Dutch East Indies as easily as the Dutch civil service did in World War II when it had little obvious qualms about working with the German occupiers in Holland, and Wardenaar no doubt saw the handover of Deshima to the British as a logical extension of the existence of a new regime in Batavia. The Dutch trading post on Deshima had always been controlled from Batavia. Eventually it all became irrelevant because English rule over the Dutch East Indies lasted only a few years years and by 1816 - the same year that Willem wardenaar died - the Dutch were back in control - much to the disgust of Raffles who vigorously but fruitlessly protested against the decision in London to relinquish the Dutch East Indies.

15 July 1778: Leaves Holland for the Dutch East Indies as a young ordinary sailor on board the VOC ship "Pallas".
29 March 1779: The "Pallas" arrives at Batavia.
July 1779: Taking lessons to learn Javanese language.
14 September 1779: Appointed "Assistent" (a junior colonial administrator)
1783: Appointed "Procureur" in Semarang in Central Java.
15 August 1785: Bookkeeper and sworn translator, as well as "scriba" of the "Landraad", also in Semarang.
13 November 1792: "Fiscaal" in Banda, with added title and rank of "onderkoopman" (literally, deputy merchant)
1 November 1793: Dismissed as "Onderkoopman" and provisional "fiscaal" on Banda.
19 February 1794: Official letter from the "commissarissen-generaal" (commissioners-general) (res. CCGG) in Batavia to confirm Willem Wardenaar as Onderkoopman and fiscaal on Banda.
13 May 1797: 2nd Administrateur (Administrator) in the rice warehouse in Batavia (res. CCGG).
14 March 1800: "Opperhoofd" (head) of trade in Japan, meaning he became head of the Deshima trading post
1802: Provisional "Opperkoopman" (senior merchant), still on Deshima
23 December 1803: Returns to Batavia, having been confirmed as Opperkoopman by "patriase missive" on 4 July of that year.
1804: "geassumeerd lid" (member) of the Raad of Justitie (Justice Council) in Batavia.
27 December 1805 to 11 February 1806 and 25 July 1806 to 18 September 1807: "waarnemend gecomitteerde over de Benedenlanden" - acting deputy for the Lower Regions.
      10 January 1806 to 11 February 1806: "Heemraad"
22 May 1807 to 18 September 1807: Acting "Gecommiteerde over de Bovenlanden" (Deputy for the Upper Regions)
      30 March 1808 to 1811: "Raad-Extraordinair van Nederlands Indie"
1811: Member of the Commission for Taking Over Dutch Possessions in Palembang (Sumatra)
It was as a member of this (English) commission that he became embroiled in the British attempt to take control of Deshima. The British had set up the commission to organise the administrative takeover of the Dutch East Indies when the mother country had become part of Napoleon's empire.

Willem Wardenaar owned land at Petodjo, Kampong Doeri and Tomang.
