  • Notes
    • King 1792-1809
King upon the death of his father on 29 of March 1792. Crowned in Norrköping 3 of April 1800. Captured 13 of March 1809 and deposed by the Parliament 10 of May 1809. Died 7 of February 1837.
When Napoleon tried to make him declare war against Britain, he refused. He was convinced that Napoleon was the beast mentioned in the book of Revelation. Therefore Sweden was attacked by Napoleon's allied Russia. The war 1808-1809 was a disaster for Sweden. Finland was lost to Russia. Because of the disaster, Gustaf IV Adolf was deposed, and the country got a new constitution. Instead of the constitution of the Freedom time (1719-1772) where the Parliament had all the power and the Gustavian autocracy (1772-1809) the new constitution stipulated that the power should be divided between the King and the Parliament. Gustaf IV Adolf died in exile.
He was succeded by his uncle Carl XIII.
      Motto: God and the people
