      Il passa une partie de son enfance à Paris. Il fait des études de géologie à Lausanne, côtoie les amis de son père, Ramuz, Ansermet, Stravinski, Cingria. A 22 ans, il s'embarque pour l'Amérique, habité par le rêve américain. Ses débuts sont difficiles; il exerce divers métiers avant de devenir journaliste. Devenu citoyen américain, il participe à la deuxième guerre mondiale et est présent à la libération de Paris. Grand-reporter, il sillona la planète et se fixa à Londres en 1953 où il fut correspondant du Journal de Genève. Ses chroniques font transparaître combien l'homme est attachant et combien l'écrivain est sensible. Il fait preuve d'humour dans tous ses livres.
