  • Notes
    • King 1697-1718
King upon the death of his father on 5 of April 1697. Crowned himself in Stockholm 14 of December 1697.
Carl XII had to fight wars most of his time. He was a military genius. In 1700 Denmark, Saxony/Poland and Russia attacked. The King left Stockholm 16 of April, and he never returned.
He won several battles against, e.g. the battle of Narva in 1700, but the defeat in Poltava 1709 was the beginning of the end. Carl XII had to escape to Turkey, where he tried to convince the Sultan to attack Russia. He failed, but stayed in Turkey until 1714.
In Sweden the Parliament was tired of waiting for the King. They planned to make his sister Queen and abolish the autocracy. When the King heard about this, he ordered that the Parliament should be dissolved, and so it was.
Karl returned to Sweden (Stralsund in Pomerania) 11 of November 1714 and came to Sanica in December 1715.
In Autumn 1718 he marched against Norwa with an army of 40 000 men. During the campaign, the King was shot and killed. Rumour have said the the King was murdered, but this has never been proven.
After his death both his sister Ulrika Eleonora and his nephew Karl Fredrik were candidates to the vacant throne. He was finally succeded by Ulrika Eleonora.
