      Created Knight of the Garter at the institution of the Order. 2nd Earl of Devon. !Inq p.m. 1 Ric.II no.12 !From "Old Devon Families" Hugh Courtenay...distinguished himself in 1339, in repelling the French, who having made a descent on Plymouth, burnt a great part of the town. A little later he was in France, serving in the wars of Edward III. He married Margaret, daughter of Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford, upon whom her father settled Powderham Castle. Earl Hugh died at Tiverton, and was buried in Exeter Cathedral, where his tomb, and that of his countess, and their son Sir Philip Courtenay, who died in 1406, are now to be seen. He and his wife are buried in a large tomb in Exeter Cathedral.
