  • Notes
    • Sir Ralph de Shelton I,14th Lord of Shelton was Knighted {date unknown} in England. At his mothers death in 1334 he was made Lord of the Manor. He first married his cousin Anne Borgulion. In 1346,King Edward III granted his letters patent showing that he was in the King's own company at Crecy, and was Knighted for saving the life of the Black Prince {Edward III, Prince of Wales,1330-1376}. He built old Shelton Hall, which was destroyed by fire in 1600. He also built Church of St.Mary's in Shelton, Norfolk, England, where he is buried. His second marriage was to Joan de Plais daughter of John de Plais in 1346. She died in 1405

Blomefield notes that Ralph was 18 years old at the time of this mother Alice's death in 1333. In a writ in the Patent Rolls 2 October 1333 issued from Waltham is a grant to Walter de Manny for the custody of the manor of Shelton co Norfolk during the minority of the son and heir of John de Shelton (Edw III vol ii p 478); also a similar writ from the Fine Rolls on 22 April 1333 with an order to escheator to deliver the lands in Brent Illeye to the Bishop. In the Close Rolls issued by Edward III on 28 April 1333 from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, his custody is given to Walter, Bishop of Norwich. In a Fine Rolls writ issued 20 October 1333 John de Blomvill the escheator is ordered to take into the King's hands the lands which Alice, late the wife of John Shelton, deceased held for life of the inheritance of Ralph son and heir of John, a minor in the King's ward. December 1 1344 the King issued a general pardon from Calais to Ralph Shelton for good service in France on the condition that he does not withdraw from the King's service (Patent Rolls Edw III vii p 512). In 1345 Ralph was lord in Shelton. In 1346 King Edward III granted Sir Ralph letters patent signifying that he was in the King's own company at the battle of Crecy and there received the order of knighthood(Patent Rolls May 1347 Edw III vii p 291). The King pardoned him the contempt and penalty which Ralph had incurred for not taking that order upon him before (Patent Rolls Edw III vii p481) when the King issued his proclamation that all those who had 40 pounds a year in land should take that order upon them (Rymer vol v folio 561). On his wedding to Joan daughter of Sir John de Plais of Wetyng and he settled Shelton and Bedingham manors on himself, his wife and their issue. Blomefield lists the year of his wedding as 1346 - see notes under Joan de Plais for discussion of this erroneous date and why 1364 is more plausible. 28 October 1349 Ralph was granted to wardship of the lands in Gedneye, Quapelod and Holbech in co Lincoln later of Hugh de Burgullion who heldthem in chief until the lawful age of Ralph son of Ralph Shelton, kinsman and heir of said Hugh (Fine Rolls). After that, in the same year he presented to the church at Thirsford as its patron. In 1353 he presented William Stannard as rector in Wacton (Blomefield v5 p 294) and later presented to the church at Scole. In 1355 on going beyond the sea with King Edward III, he had letters of protection. He was in the battle of Poitiers where he took John Rocourt prisoner and for whom he obtained safe conduct in 1356. He was a cousin and heir of Sir Ralf Burgulion of Kerdeston and Thirsford. He presented to the church in Scole 6 Jan 1361 (Blomefield V1 p 133-135). 10 November 1364 issued from Westminster, William de Elmham who was going beyond the seas had letters nominating Sir Ralph and Geoffrey Dersham as his attorneys (Patent Rolls Edw III xiii p30). May 12 1367 he received a commission from the King (along with Sir William de Hoo and Sir Edmund Thorp et al) to make inquisitions into the King's business in Norfolk and Suffolk to ensure that the King was receiving all the revenue to which he was entitled (Patent Rolls Edw III xiii p 436) October 6 1368 he attended the wedding of Sir Edmund Thorp to Margeret daughter of Richard de la Rivere (Blomefield v 5 p 148). In a Fine Rolls writ issued 28 March 1371 Ralph was directed with Robert le Mortimer, Roger Geneye, William Clere, William de Norton and John de Cressingham to collect a parish subsidy in Norfolk to safeguard the defense of England and further the war in France. In letters patent issued from Westminster 26 November 1372 (and Fine Rolls issued 8 June 1371), he was given a mandate with Robert de Mortimer, Roger Geney, William de Clere, William de Norton and John de Cressingham to collect without delay in Norfolk a subsidy of 116 s from each parish amounting to 4674 pounds 16 s in the county. 1 February 1375 he was ordered to take into the King's hands the lands of Roger le Walssh, deceased, in the county of Suffolk and to make inquiries touching his lands and heir. His will was proved in 1375 by the name of Sir Ralf Shelton senior Knt and he ordered his body to be buried in the chancel of St Mary's church at Shelton. His effigies are there complete in armour and a Saracen's head couped for his crest with a monument over his head. Copinger lists his date of death as 17 Nov 1373 (Copinger i p37) His will was proved in Norwich in 1375 (NRS). The Calendar of Inquisitions Post Mortem (writ issued 30 March 1376) says that he died 16 October last (1375) ahd also lists his children with Joan (Joan aged 12, Margeret aged 5 and Isabel half a year) and says these daughters are the next heir of Ralph and Joan. His wife Joan died in 1405 with no heirs by Sir Ralph. Blomefield v5 p 255 says that he was lord of Snoryng Magna in 1353. Whitaker says that he built the old Shelton hall and died 17 Nov 1378 (odd that his will was proven 3 years earlier)
