HENRY SKARBOROWGH (2), son of HENRY SKARBOROWGH (1), was born at N. Walsham, County Norfolk, England and was baptised there Sept. 21, 1565.
He attended school there and at Norwich, and was admitted to Caius College, Nov. 3, 1581. Of N. Walsham, Esq. He married MARY, daughter of JOHN HUMBERSTONE, of Loddon, Co. Norfolk, Esq. He died August 24, 1617, and was buried at N. Walsham, (monument in the church there), and his will was proved in Norwich in 1617.

The following information was provided by Thomas Woodcock, The College of Arms, London, England on April 8, 1997.

The attached printed pedigree shows that Henry Scarburgh, the first named of the three brothers in the grant had a grandson Sir Charles Scarburgh. Sir Charles, who was knighted on 14 August 1669 at Durdans which was Lord Berkeley's house at Epson in Surrey, was a Physician who became Member of Parliament for Camelford in 1685 and I enclose biographies of him from the Dictionary of National Biography and from The History of Parliament, The House of Commons 1660-90 (1983). Although he does not appear on a pedigree officially recorded at the College of Arms. The History of Parliament suggests that he was the second son of Edmund Scarburgh who emigrated to Virginia and that he had and elder brother Edmund Scarburgh who seems to have remained in America and who is I think the man in whom you are interested. Although Sir Charles does not appear on an officially registered pedigree at the College there is an entry of a marriage on a pedigree signed on 29 June 1737 by Henry, Lord Ingram and Viscount Irwin who was born on 30 April 1691 (College of Arms Ms: 3D14/155) which shows that Lord Irwin married "Ann daughter and one of the coheirs of Charles Scarborough, esquire of Windsor, Berkshire, one of the grooms of the bedchamber to H.R.H. George, Prince of Denmark". A further search in unofficial collections containing papers of former heralds records the obituaries of three daughters of Sir Charles Scarburgh all of whom were buried at Acton Church in Middlesex (Pulman Collection JP 90 + 13). They are listed as:-

Frances, youngest daughter of Sir Charles Scarburgh who died 13 May 1706 aged 33; Anne, eldest daughter of Sir Charles Scarburgh who died 3 June 1707 aged 58; and Eliz, daughter of Sir Charles Scarburgh who died 15 October 1707 aged 52.

      Author's Comment:

The Edmond Scarburgh mentioned in the award of the Coat of Arms was the Capt. Edmond Scarburgh who emigrated to Virginia in 1621 (1584-1634) with his son Edmond (1617-1671), the later becoming the famous Edmond Scarburgh of Accomack County, Virginia. Many of the descendants in the West lines honored the names Edmond and Scarburgh by using those names for their descendants. Many historians used the spelling as "Edmund"; I believe incorrectly. In researching my "West" Line, descending from Col. John West (1638-1703)and Matilda Scarburgh (1644-1719), I found that documents actually signed by my ancestors usually used the spelling as "Edmond". I found that spelling in the will of Edmond West, Sr. (1731-1787) and on a note attached to a table owned by one of my cousins, saying it built by John Edmond West (1793-?) in 1837 in Jay County, Indiana. My grandfather, Thomas Dixon West (1849-1930), who served in the Indiana Volunteers during 1864, named his last born son "John Edmond West", my uncle, in 1908.
