    • Acceded: 22 Apr 1246.
      Prince of Lower Powys. Avowed adversary of Llywelyn Fawr Prince of Wales for hedgemony in Wales. Responsible for murder of Llywelyn Fawr's maternal uncle Owain. Aft Wm de Braose's downfall, began raiding Welsh Marches. Oct 1208 John's forces defeated him & took him captive at Shrewsbury Castle. This ocurred at a supposed peace parlay at Shrewsbury. 1212 Reluctantly joined Llywelyn Fawr's alliance against John.1215 Allied w/ John against Llywelyn & then defeated by Llywelyn. Fled to Chester; Powys fell to Llywelyn. Died in exile in England, a broken man.
      His children anglicised their name to "de la Pole" after his castle of Pool in Wales.
