  • Notes
    • The spitting image of his father, Donald Sutherland, this young, square-faced actor seems due for major success in the 1990s. He handles starring roles and supporting parts equally well, and to date he's avoided typecasting. First appearing on-screen in Max Dugan Returns (1983, a bit part with his father) and 1984's The Bay Boy he was widely noticed as the adolescent tough in Stand By Me (1986). In 1987, a creepy turn as a young vampire in The Lost Boys cemented his burgeoning-star status. More ensemble films with hot young actors followed, including Young Guns (1988), its 1990 sequel, and Flatliners (also 1990), which costarred Julia Roberts, to whom he was briefly engaged; the last-minute cancellation of their planned Hollywood wedding was headline fodder for months. Since then Sutherland has, like his father, shown a willingness to try almost any kind of part, from comic (a straitlaced FBI agent trying to deal with flaky fugitive Dennis Hopper in 1990's Flashback to creepy (a venal, by-the-book Marine who's been involved in foul play in 1992's A Few Good Men He was an effective and empathic lead in the American version of The Vanishing and a lively Athos in The Three Musketeers (both 1993). That same year, he made a credible directing debut on the telefilm Last Light in which he also starred, as a convicted killer sentenced to death. Clearly, the sky's the limit for this talented young man.
