  • Notes
    • At the age of twelve when the family went to Warwick, New York, she travelled by canel boat with her stepmother's mother, Mrs. Hedges, and two of the Hedges children; the men and teams following later. For a day or two while waiting for the teams to come they lived on fish and such food as could readily be found. They remained at Warwick only a year, then moved to Exeter, New York. Owing to many household duties made necessary by the large family of her half-brothers and sisters, her early life was a hard one and she had little chance for school, although she tried hard to obtain an education, even doing washing in order to buy a spelling book for three shillings. Yet she learned to read later and was always fond of reading. In 1817 she and her husband with their family moved to Barrington, New York. Then in 1822 to a 60 acre farm in Jerusalem, four miles from Penn Yan, one mile west of Lake Keuka. Died in the home which Isaac W. and Elizabeth Hartshorn provided for their parents
