  • Notes
    • second Lord of the Manor

      Town Clerk of Albany
      Secretary of Indian Affairs 1721-1749
      Member of Legislative Council 1725-1749

After some mercantile training with one of his Schuyler uncles, he succeeded his father in the office of Secretary of Indian affairs and was active in the management of the estate. Due to his brother Johannes early death, Philip Livingston inherited Livingston Manor as the rule of primogeniture stipulated. Under his guidance, Livingston Manor became a well organized mercantile enterprise. Tenants grew wheat which was grinded at Livingston mills to flour, of which the surplus was exported through New York to England and the West Indies. Return voyages brought sugar and drygoods which were disposed of by his merchant cousins in Albany. Philip Livingston enrolled his younger brother Robert as an agent for the Manor in New York City and later had his sons trained as merchants and located at strategic locations in New York, London and Jamaica. In 1743 he established Ancram, one of the first iron foundries in America, a sizeable investment that paid off handsomely, granting the Livingstons a virtual monopoly for iron in upstate New York.

      Fortune : 64,000 £ 1750
