  • Notes
    • 2nd Earl of Sefton, 1st Baron Sefton of Croxteth
He was styled Viscount Molyneux till 1795 when he succeeded his father and became 2nd Earl of Sefton. On 25 April 1789 he matriculated at Oxford and from 1816 until 1831 was M.P. for Droitwich. It was said that as an M.P. he was able to carry with him more votes than any man of his day. In 1817 he sent a letter to a Mr. Hone with a cheque for £100 congratulating him on his escape from Crown Prosecution; this gave so much offence at Court that he became a stranger at Court. He then further estranged himself from Court when protesting that White's Club exclude the name of the Princess of Wales from a ball.

According to Greville: 'His father had stamped upon him his hideous form but, with it, his sharp and caustic wit; having successively sought for amusement in hunting, shooting, racing, gaming, he plunged with ardour into politics. He was a devoted husband, a kind and affectionate father, a courteous, cordial, and obliging host. He was absolutely devoid of religious belief or opinions.'

He was Master of the Quorn Hunt 1800-1805, and 'did things in an imperial manner'. In April 1822 he won £1,020 at whist in the one night at Brook's; and in February 1829 he broke the bank at Crockford's two nights running, carrying off £7,000.

Having been neglected at Court by George IV upon the accession of William IV, he was created, on 20 June 1831, Baron Sefton of Croxteth.

On 1 January 1792 he married the Hon. Maria Margaretta Craven and they became the parents of eleven children. Of his wife it was said that when she first came out the future William IV was in love with her.

In 1838, after a long illness, the Earl of Sefton died aged sixty-six, his wife surviving him until 1851 aged eighty-one.
