Notes |
- As his father married very late in life, Eli Whitney jr was only five years old when the famous inventor and pioneer manufacturer died in 1825. The Whitney Arms Company and its famous machine shops were thus run by the boy's elder cousins, Eli Whitney Blake and Philos Blake, both able mechanics and inventors in their own rights. When he finally came of age and took over in 1841, Eli Whitney je found Whitneyville in dire needs of new machines and money to fund it. By accident, he came to diversify the firms activities and start to manufacture recreational firemars, which prived more profitable than the army rifles. Eli Whitney jr also manufactured the famous Walker colts for the Texas rangers, as his fellow Connecticut yankee, Samuel Colt then did not have a factory to fulfill his first order. Eli Whitney jr created the New Haven Water Company as a private venture, after the project did not progress as a public enterprise. He therefore created Whitney lake and dimensioned the dam to provide power and water to his Whitneyville industrial complex as well as to the city. In 1888, Eli Whitney jr sold the armory to Winchester, setting the Whitney family more firmly in the field of public utilities, banking and real estate in New Haven, rather than the manufacturing activities for which his father was so famous. Eli Whitney jr also served as an Alderman of New Haven. He built himself a fashionable mansion on his North Edgehill property. His only son, Eli Whitney III, sold this mansion to investment banker Frederick Brewster, who rebuilt it as "Edgerton"
