- an esthetic invalid, living in Paris. Despite a partial paralysis (the result of a hunting accident) he collected masterpieces, kept a brilliant salon, and, since it pleased him to have his own wine label, bought in 1855 the renowned Brane-Mouton vineyards near Bordeaux.
Not because he was particularly well-versed in viticulture, but to keep up with the Joneses, in this case the Pereire family of bankers who owned a vineyard. In the important wine register of 1855, his product ---unlike Lafite and three other estates---was not ranked among the top Premiers Crus of the Medoc region. This seems to have annoyed Nathaniel, but no matter how hard he tried, neither he nor his successors were able to advance their Mouton-Rothschild from its ranking as a "merely" second-class wine.
