Notes |
- only son and main heir of New Haven shirt manufacturer turned armorer Oliver Winchester. He joined the Winchester Repeating Arms Company of which he became president following his father's death in 1880. His tenure was short as he died of tuberculosis just a few month later, about fifteen years after death had sought his infant daughter with a similar disease. After his death, the Winchester estate was left to his widow, the former Sarah Lockwood Pardee, of another prominent New Haven family, whom he had married in 1862. Sarah Winchester established the William Wirt Winchester Hospital for treatment of tuberculosis in New Haven and funded it with almost 2 million $.
