  • Notes
    • played a conspicious role in the succession of events that led the American colonies to independence from the crown of England.
Studied law in London, initially being a physician, and as he wrote and published numerous pamphlets in favor of American independence. As it became obvious that no peaceful way to American Independence was possible, the sentiment against the Lees in the English Parliament and other political circles made their staying in England dangerous. Appointed by the Continental Congress as diplomatic agents in Europe, they turned their attention towards securing support for the American cause in France, Prussia, Austria and Spain. In France where Arthur Lee sided with Benjamin Franklin and Silas Deane, the Americans eventually found an ally but disputes between the Lees and Deane tarnished their reputation. Their efforts in other European countries were essentially fruitless and their positions were eliminated after the reorganization of the diplomatic corps.

William and Arthur Lee did not fill any important political office thereafter.
