  • Notes
    • Arrived in Baltimore on July 6, 1870 on the ship Pallas from Bremen (listed in Germans to America Vol 24, p. 372, occupation listed as Farmer and place of origin was Prussia). Returned to Europe and came back to United States arriving in New York on February 3, 1872 on the ship Hammonia (Germans to America Vol. 26, p. 224). Both times his name was listed as Anton Potrykus. Hamburg ship departure information for the Hammonia shows Anton Potrikus departing alone, city-Koln, state/province-W.P., occupation-farm laborer. Applied for citizenship on October 29, 1872, in Winnebago County, WI. Lived in Oshkosh for about 10 years before purchasing farm in Bear Creek township in 1880.

When Anton and Elizabeth arrived on the farm, there were about 6 crop acres located to the south of the house. A log home stood about 25' northeast of the present farm home, which was completed in about 1900. The log structure was torn down and the frame structure was moved to just east of the windmill and became a tool shed. 1881 property tax records for Waupaca County, Bear Creek, show that Anton owned 80 acres: the N 1/2 of the SE 1/4, Sec. 6, Twp. of Bear Creek. It was valued at $360. He had 5 cattle and 3 swine. In about 1915, he sold the farm to his son, Joseph, and his daughter, Anna. In 1916, he went to live with his daughter, Mathilde (perhaps because Joseph was too noisy) but returned to the farm shortly before he died. He was very ill when he returned by train and had to travel on a stretcher. Death certificate indicates he died of testicular cancer. His obituary stated he died on Monday morning at 9 a.m. The "immediate cause of death being dropsy." He was noted to have "been a life long friend of the senior editor and his hearty laugh and genial smile will be missed by at least one in this city."
