  • Notes
    • went to NSW. Later went from NSW to Mt Martha, Victoria (still under NSW but separated as a State in 1851) in 1846 to “Tichingorouke” which had been leased by Capt Reid said to be a brother to David Reid.
The original lease of 2500 acres extended to the sea; Capt Reid was said to have skipped back to Scotland, bankrupt in 1845. Alexander was originally given a lease for 500 cattle over an inland part of the land. He tried to purchase the lease but the Government sold off the sea front, but later let him buy up to 1400 acres in stages. He called it The Briars after their home in St Helena, and the present National Trust Home was built from 1848 to 1851. The Shire operates the main property as a Park with conservation walks.
