Thoma s Hanford' 1936 Vol.1 p13 BIR-MARR: 'The History of the Old Town of Derby, Connecticut 1642-18 80' by Samuel Orcutt and Ambrose Beardsley, M.D. 1880 p777 'Stephen , settled in Derby, at the Narrows. Stephen Whitney started the firs t store at the Narrows in 1762 or 3, in which he continued until 1768 , when he gave up to all his creditors. At this time there were bu t a few houses at the Narrows, most of the trade centering at the ol d village of Derby and at Hawkins Point, and hence the trade was no t sufficient at the Narrows to sustain a store. After this he engage d more entirely in the West India trade, and in which 'he had gaine d a modest competency a second time, when the sinking of a brig, th e cargo of which belonged to him, brought him to poverty once more; a fter which he made a living, in his old age by trading in a small wa y in the towns about Derby' [footnote 'The Whitney Family' 1,41 - ass uming Phoenix]
