  • Notes
    • Moved with aunt and her husband ( John Bradford) to Norwich, CT ca 1659. Stayed with them until his marriage in Nov 1668, to Miriam Tracy. Because of Bradford's influance, was able to draw a home lot in Norwich, one of the best lots. After Thomas Bradford's death, Waterman's aunt remarried to his father-in-law, LT. Thomas Tracy. Upon her death, Waterman and Thomas Bradford (another Bradford nephew) each inherited one third of the Bradford-Tracy estate, with the balance going to other Bradford relatives. Thomas Bradford bought out Waterman and the other relatives.

Military title's were highly esteemed. Thomas Waterman was a Sgt of the Norwich trainband ( local militia) as early as 1669. At a general session of the General Assembly, May 11, 1671, Thomas Waterman was one of the men propounded for freeman.

Innkeeper's were concidered as town officers. To obtain a licence to keep a House of Entertainment, a man must be of good report and possesed of a comfortable estate. Tje first in Norwich was Waterman. On Dec. 11, 1679, it was agreed and voted on by the town that Thomas Waterman be granted " four ackers of paster land where he can convenyently fint it ny about the valley going from his house to the woods."

No records of the First Church of Norwich are know to exist befor 1700, but the Waterman family were members, and the name apears on the church rolls for many years. In 1689, Waterman was one of the committee apointed to "concider and contrive to enlarge the meeting house"

In 1689 and 1690, the New England colonies prepared for the French and Indian War. The General Assembly of Connecticut directed each town to organize dragoons... Thomas Waterman was appointed Ensign for New London county. There after he is shown both as Ensign and SGT in records.

Records show Waterman took and active part in town affairs. The Waterman name left it's impact geographically, Waterman's Point in Norwich, below the landing, on the left bank ot the Thames River, about a mile from West Side Bridege... a battery for defence, with four six-pounders were erected in 1775.
