  • Notes
    • sailed to Philadelphia with a party of Plymouth Friends, on the ship "Desire,' in 1686. There were three other Foxes among the Plymouth Friends who came as indentured servants: James, son of Francis Fox, a Richard Fox and a John Fox. It is worth mentioning that Justinian had an older brother named John.

Justinian was indentured to John Shellson and his wife Naomi for the trip to America. Shellson went with the Fox party to the 5377 acre property of the Plymouth Friends.
John Shellson died in 1689 and Justinian, maintained close connections with the James Fox family. He may have taken over James Fox'es bakery business when the latter died in 1699. He is known to have been a witness at the wedding of James' son George in 1696 and later signed his will.

His son Joseph and his son-in-law Joseph Rakestraw, along with Edward Warner, an earlier Portues' apprentice became the nucleus of the Carpenter's Company, a construction trade guild. Warner had married the daughter of another Company member, William Coleman. Portues, who had come (as a servant indentured to William Wade) with William Penn in 1682, became wealthy and Warner and Fox were his heirs The construction business was quite a tight little circle and the Company tried to maintain it that way. This was probably why both Fox and Warner got heavily into politics.

While Justinian and his wife did not become members themselves, they were obviously very close to members of the Society of Friends and several of their children became Quakers.

We find his signature affixed as a witness to the wills of Samuel Sheppard, Robert Turnham, Anthony Taylor, Jeremiah Gray, etc.

McCracken states that Justinian was a baker who arrived in Delaware on 23 June 1686, on board the Ship "Desire" and that he was listed as a servant of John Shellson and wife Naomi. He states, further, that Justinian was from Plymouth, Eng., the son of Edward Fox and his 2nd wife, Mary Ball. Justinian was baptized at Charles Church, Plymouth on 19 Dec. 1673. McCracken also stated that, as Justinian was baptized in an Anglican Church and baptized all of his children as Presbyterians, that Justinian was probably not a Quaker as supposed by some other genealogists.
