  • Notes
    • In 1686, Robert Sanders of Albany (who was married to Baltus Barent van Kleek's sister) and Myndert Harmense Van der Bogert were granted, as partners, 12,000 acres of land at the present site of Poughkeepsie, New York. They were given the grant by virtue of a deed from the Indians a year earlier. On June 9, 1687 at the home of Myndert Harmense van der Bogert, in Albany, a lease for 48 acres at the site the Indians called "Mennisink and Poghkepesing" was given to "Baltus Barent Cleek." The lease was to run ten years. So it was that the following spring Baltus van Kleek built of stone the first actual dwelling at Poughkeepsie.
