  • Notes
    • The name Pollok was changed to Polk by my emigrant ancestor, Robert Bruce (Pollok) Polk, after he arrived in America about 1672. Robert and his family settled in Somerset County, Maryland. From the descendants of Robert and Magdalen (Tasker) Polk come a long list of statesmen, Revolutionary War and Confederate soldiers, governors of state and the 11th president of the U.S., President James Knox Polk. Robert shortened his name to Polk after arriving in America about 1678. He had numerous land grants in Maryland. Robert was Capt. in Oliver Cromwell's Army. He married Magdalen (Tasker) Porter, widow of Col. Porter, of Cromwell's army. Robert Bruce Pollock was the 2nd Son of Baron Sir Robert Bruce Pollok. The name "Bruce" may have been carried over from the Polk's Scottish Royalty ancestry, Bruce family (see Robert "The Bruce" Bruce, etc.).

Capt. Robert Bruce Pollok emigrated from Donegal Ireland to Maryland around 1680 and was the progenitor of a great number of persons now using the name Polk and Pollock. Prominent among his American descendants were James K. Polk, 11th President of the United states, General leonidas Polk of Civil War fame, and Colonel Thomas Polk of charlotte, North Carolina, who convened that meeting at which Mecklenburg County, North Carolina declared it's independence from England in may 1775, a year ahead of the Philadelphia Convention. Governor Charles Polk of Delaware and Governor and Senator Thrusten Polk of Missouri also belonged to this family. Other notable Pollocks were James Pollock, an early Governor of Pennsylvania; Thomas Pollock, born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1654, and who died in 1722 while serving as acting governor of the Colony of North Carolina, and Oliver Pollock, from Colerain Ireland, who settled in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and is credited as the "financier of the American Revolution in the West" during the Revolutionary War.
