  • Notes
    • King of Neustria and Burgundy (673 and 675-691), King of the Franks (679-691).
Clovis II's third son acceded to the throne of Neustria and Burgundy in 673 A.D. after the death of his brother, Chlotar III. Theodoric was made king by Ebroin, Mayor of the Palace, but was almost immediately overthrown by Childeric II, King of Austrasia, at the instigation of the kingdom's leading noblemen. Theodoric was shut up in Saint-Denis. When Childeric II died in 675, Theodoric III was re-established on the throne but reigned under Ebroin's control. The death of King Dagobert II of Austrasia in 679 A.D. made him King of all the Franks. Ebroin's murder in 680 dealt a fatal blow to Neustria and its troops were defeated at Tertry in 687 A.D. by Pippin of Heristal, Mayor of the Palace of Austrasia. Government of the three kingdoms then passed into Pippin's hands although he left Theodoric on the throne.
