  • Notes
    • King of Soissons (511-561), King of Reims (555-561), King of the Franks (558-561).

Clovis I's fourth son became King of Soissons in 511 A.D. when the kingdom of the Franks was divided up. With his brothers, he fought the Burgundians and ordered the assassination of two of Chlomodir's sons before taking over part of Chlodomir's erstwhile kingdom (524 A.D). He conquered Thuringia in 531 A.D. with Theodoric I. When his grand-nephew, Theodebald, King of Reims, died in 555 A.D, he took over Theodebald's kingdom then did the same thing in 558 on the death of his brother, Childebert I. In doing so, he became sole ruler of all the Frankish states. However, the unity of the Frankish kingdom lasted only a short time. On Chlotar I's death, it was again divided between his four sons.
