  • Notes
    • Chief or king of the salian Franks of Tournai c. 460. Defeated Attila the Hun in 451, was son of son in law of Clodion

The first dynasty of Frankish kings reigned over Gaul from 481 to 751 A.D. It gets its name from Merovech, Clovis' grandfather. The founder of the dynasty was Clovis I, King from 481 to 511 A.D, who, thanks to his many victories, was the first King of all the Franks.
Since Germanic tradition demanded that a kingdom be divided between the heirs, Clovis' kingdom was later split up and, over the 6th century, three kingdoms gradually came into being - Neustria, Austrasia and Burgundy. They engaged in a long power struggle. The kingdom of the Franks was only reunified for short periods, during the reigns of Chlotar I (558-561), Chlotar II (613-629) and Dagobert I (632-6391.
After 639 A.D, the Merovingian monarchy swiftly fell into a decline and real power passed to the Mayors of the Palace who succeeded in making their positions hereditary in Austrasia, through the Pippinides dynasty. This was the period of the "Sluggard Kings". Eventually, in 751 A.D, the Mayor of the Palace Pepin the Short removed the last Merovingian King, Childeric III from power and seized the throne. This marked the end of the first royal dynasty.
